Noil arrested in traffic stop
Receiver charged with not having a driver’s license.
By Suzanne Halliburton shalliburton@statesman. com
Texas A&M receiver Speedy Noil was arrested late last week in College Station for not having a driver’s license.
The arrest happened in the early hours Friday morning before Noil played in A&M’s Friday Night Lights Scrimmage.
A&M officials issued a statement Monday saying “athletics was made aware of the arrest of Speedy Noil for driving without a license.”
Noil, who was a five-star prospect when he signed two years ago, has stayed in trouble with coach Kevin Sumlin.
He was suspended twice last season, once for the Western Carolina game and then for Music City Bowl, which A&M lost 27-21 to Louisville.
This time a year ago, Sumlin told the media that Noil “had some things he had to complete,” which was why he wasn’t working out during spring practices. Sumlin allowed him to return to the team after spring practice was finished.
Noil led the Aggies in all-purpose yards in 2014, his freshman season. He was named to the SEC all-freshman team and earned all-conference honorable mention. Last summer, Noil was selected to the preseason All-SEC first team.
Football: Oklahoma transfer Trevor Knight could have the edge at quarterback for Texas A&M this fall.
At least that’s how it appears after the Aggies’ scrimmage Friday night at Kyle Field.
Knight was the quarterback for the first two series, although he played with both the first and second teams.
A&M didn’t send out official statistics from the scrimmage, but the folks at Tex ags.com kept a running play log. These unofficial stats had Knight completing 7 of his 15 attempts for 132 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also carried the ball twice for 27 yards.
Meanwhile, Jake Hubenak also split time with the first-and second-team offenses. The former Georgetown High standout was 12 of 20 for 137 yards with no touchdowns or picks. He also had three carries for 53 yards.
Knight, who was beaten out by Baker Mayfield at Oklahoma, arrived in College Station in January. Hubenak, a transfer from Blinn College for last season, was mainly the third-string quarterback in the fall. Hubenak got the nod to start A&M’s bowl game against Louisville after the transfers of Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray.
Basketball: SFA hired A&M assistant Kyle Keller as its next head basketball coach. The school announced the hire Monday. He’ll replace Brad Underwood, who took over at Oklahoma State last month.
Keller is the second assistant to leave the program after A&M won the SEC regular season championship and reached the NCAA Sweet 16. Rick Stansbury was hired by Western Kentucky to be its next head coach.
Keller has been at A&M for five seasons.
Track and field: For the second straight year, the Texas A&M men’s team was named the most outstanding university squad at last weekend’s Texas Relays at Mike A. Meyers Stadium at UT.
The award was selected by the media who covered the meet. It’s the sixth time the Aggies have won the honor since 2009 and ninth time overall.
Texas A&M won four men’s relay titles. Their times in the 4x200 and 4x800 currently are the top times in the country.
